How Roof Pitch Is Measured
Roof pitch is always expressed as rise over 12 — inches of vertical rise for every 12 inches (one foot) of horizontal run. A 6/12 roof rises 6 inches for every foot it travels toward the ridge.

Roof pitch is the roof's slope, expressed as inches of vertical rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run — so a 6/12 roof rises 6 inches for every foot it travels. You measure it by finding the vertical rise over a 12-inch horizontal span, either from inside the attic or with a level and tape measure on the roof. Pitch is the single biggest factor in how a roof sheds water and snow, and in Oklahoma it plays a big role in hail and wind performance.
Most Oklahoma homes sit between 4/12 and 6/12, which is a comfortable middle ground: steep enough to shed rain and hail quickly, and safe enough for a crew to walk without special equipment. Pitches around 6/12 to 8/12 shed water even faster and are common on higher-end homes, but they cost more to build and replace. Anything below 2/12 is considered low-slope and needs a different roofing system entirely — standard shingles won't perform on it.
Pitch affects cost three ways: material waste, labor, and accessories. Steeper roofs generate more cut waste on hips, valleys, and rakes — a 4/12 roof wastes roughly 10–13% of materials, while a 10/12 roof can waste 20–25%. Steeper roofs also require more labor, extra safety equipment, and often more flashing and ventilation work. That's why the same square footage can cost 15–30% more on a steep roof than on a low one.
Anything 9/12 or steeper is considered very steep and should only be worked on with a roof jack, harness, or other fall-protection system — most roofers won't walk a 9/12 or higher without one. At 12/12 (a true 45°) and above, specialized steep-slope crews and equipment are required. The safest way is from the attic: hold a level against a rafter, mark the 12-inch point, and measure straight down to the rafter — that vertical distance is the rise for a 12-inch run.
