A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofing materials are priced and ordered by the square — a 1,500 sq ft roof is 15 squares. Shingles are sold in bundles of about one-third of a square (3 bundles per square), so a 15-square roof needs roughly 45 bundles.
