How the Waste Factor Works

Roofing is measured in squares — one square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. When a contractor orders materials, they never order your exact roof area. Every hip, valley, dormer, and gable end forces shingles to be cut, and those cutoffs can't be reused. The waste factor accounts for that:

10% — simple gable roofs with clean, straight edges
15% — standard hip and valley roofs, the most common in Tulsa
20% — complex multi-plane roofs with dormers, valleys, and steep pitch transitions

Standard architectural shingles ship 3 bundles per square. Ridge cap shingles cover about 25 linear feet per bundle. And the rule of thumb for nails is 320 nails per square — roughly 4 nails per shingle at the wind-strip, plus extra for starter course and accessories — with 20% waste added for dropped or damaged fasteners. If your quote's bundle count comes up short of these numbers, ask your contractor to explain before the crew starts.

The waste factor is the extra material — usually 10–20% — that roofers add on top of your roof's measured area to cover cutoffs at hips, valleys, and rake edges, plus starter shingles and damaged bundles. A simple gable roof wastes about 10%, a standard hip or valley roof about 15%, and a complex multi-plane roof about 20%.

Why do roofers order more shingles than my roof's square footage?

Every roof has cutoffs — shingles that can't be used because they're trimmed at hips, valleys, dormers, and gable ends. Shingles are also bundled in fixed counts, so contractors must round up to full bundles. Ordering with waste built in ensures the crew never runs short mid-job, which would leave your roof exposed and vulnerable to weather.

How many shingle bundles are in a square?

A square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Standard architectural shingles come 3 bundles per square, and 3-tab shingles come 3 to 4 bundles per square depending on the brand. Luxury or heavyweight shingles can run 4 bundles per square. Check the bundle label — coverage is printed right on it.

How many bundles of ridge cap shingles do I need?

One bundle of ridge cap shingles covers roughly 25 linear feet of ridge. Measure the total ridge length of your roof — including hip ridges — and divide by 25, rounding up to a full bundle. Most manufacturers' cap bundles also work for hip ridges, so include those in your measurement.
