Every term you'll encounter when dealing with roofs, insurance, and contractors — defined in plain English.

A
ACV (Actual Cash Value)
The depreciated value of your roof — what your insurer pays if you have an ACV policy. Always much less than replacement cost.
Asphalt Shingle
The most common residential roofing material in the US. Fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and ceramic granules. Lifespan: 20-30 years.
Attic Ventilation
The system of intake and exhaust vents that allows air to flow through your attic, preventing moisture buildup and heat damage to shingles.
B
Blistering
Bubbles that form on shingle surfaces from trapped moisture or manufacturing defects. Can lead to granule loss and premature failure.
Bond
The adhesive strip on shingles that seals them together after installation. Heat-activated; improper sealing leads to wind uplift.
C
Class 4 Shingle
The highest UL 2218 impact-resistance rating. Tested to withstand a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet. Qualifies for insurance discounts in many states.
Cricket (Saddle)
A small peaked roof structure built behind a chimney or other penetration to divert water around it, preventing pooling and leaks.
Cupping
When shingle edges curl upward, creating a cup shape that catches wind and water. A sign of aging, poor ventilation, or installation defects.
D
Decking (Sheathing)
The plywood or OSB layer nailed to your roof trusses that shingles are fastened to. Rot here means a full tear-off.
Dormer
A window structure that projects vertically from a sloping roof, with its own small roof and walls.
Drip Edge
L-shaped metal flashing installed along roof edges to direct water into gutters and away from fascia boards. Required by code in most areas.
E
EPDM
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer — a synthetic rubber membrane used for flat and low-slope commercial roofs. Black, durable, 20-30 year lifespan.
Eaves
The lower edge of a roof that overhangs the exterior walls. Where gutters are attached and where ice dams form in winter.
F
Fascia
The vertical board running along the roof edge behind the gutters. Rots when drip edge is missing or gutters overflow.
Flashing
Metal (aluminum, galvanized steel, or copper) strips installed at roof intersections — valleys, chimneys, skylights, vent pipes — to prevent water penetration.
G
Granule Loss
When the protective ceramic granules on asphalt shingles wear away, exposing the asphalt to UV rays. Normal with age; accelerated by hail, foot traffic, and defective manufacturing.
Gutter Apron
Flashing that hangs over the back edge of gutters to direct water into them instead of behind them. Different from drip edge.
H
Hip
The external angle where two sloping roof planes meet. Hip roofs have four sloping sides and perform better in high winds than gable roofs.
Hip & Ridge Shingles
Specially manufactured shingles designed for the ridge and hip lines of a roof. Thicker and pre-bent to match the roof's peak angle.
I
Ice & Water Shield
A self-adhering waterproof underlayment installed at eaves, valleys, and around penetrations. Prevents leaks from ice dams and wind-driven rain. Required by code in Oklahoma.
Impact Resistance
A shingle's ability to withstand hail impact, rated by UL 2218 (Class 1 through 4). Higher class = better protection and potential insurance discounts.
L
Laminated (Architectural) Shingle
A thicker, multi-layer asphalt shingle with a dimensional appearance. More durable and wind-resistant than 3-tab shingles. Industry standard today.
Low-Slope Roof
A roof with a pitch below 3:12 (rises less than 3 inches per foot). Requires special underlayment or membrane roofing instead of standard shingles.
M
Modified Bitumen
A multi-layer asphalt-based flat roofing system with polymer-modified membranes. Common on commercial buildings; torch-down or self-adhered application.
Mansard
A four-sided roof with two slopes on each side — the lower slope is steeper. Common on 1970s commercial buildings and French-style architecture.
N
Nailing Pattern
The specified number and placement of nails per shingle. Typically 4-6 nails per shingle. Improper nailing is the #1 cause of wind-damage claim denials.
NRCA
National Roofing Contractors Association — the leading trade association that sets installation standards and best practices for the roofing industry.
O
OSB (Oriented Strand Board)
Engineered wood panel used as roof decking. Cheaper than plywood but more susceptible to moisture damage. Must be replaced if swollen or delaminated.
Overlay (Recover)
Installing a new layer of shingles over an existing layer without tearing off. Saves money short-term but reduces lifespan and voids most manufacturer warranties.
P
Pipe Boot
The rubber seal around vent pipes that penetrate the roof. A common leak point; rubber deteriorates from UV exposure and should be replaced every 10-15 years.
Pitch (Slope)
The steepness of a roof, expressed as a ratio of rise to run (e.g., 6:12 means 6 inches of vertical rise per 12 inches of horizontal run).
Ponding Water
Water that remains on a flat roof 48+ hours after rain. Accelerates membrane degradation and can lead to structural failure if not addressed.
R
RCV (Replacement Cost Value)
What it actually costs to replace your roof today, without depreciation. RCV policies pay this amount (minus deductible) after work is complete.
Ridge
The horizontal line at the top of a roof where two sloping planes meet. Ridge vents are installed here for attic exhaust ventilation.
Ridge Vent
A continuous vent installed along the roof ridge that allows hot, moist air to escape the attic. Works passively — no electricity needed.
S
Soffit
The underside of a roof overhang (eaves). Soffit vents provide intake airflow for attic ventilation. Deteriorated soffits are a sign of poor drainage.
Square
The standard roofing measurement unit: 1 square = 100 square feet of roof area. Roofing materials are priced and ordered by the square.
Starter Strip
The first course of shingles at the eaves, installed with the adhesive strip facing up to seal the first full course. Critical for wind resistance.
Step Flashing
Individual L-shaped flashing pieces installed where a roof meets a vertical wall, each piece overlapping the shingle below. Prevents sidewall leaks.
T
3-Tab Shingle
The original asphalt shingle design — flat, single-layer, with three cutouts creating a uniform look. Cheaper but less durable than architectural shingles. Largely obsolete.
TPO
Thermoplastic Polyolefin — a white, heat-weldable single-ply membrane for flat commercial roofs. Reflective surface reduces cooling costs. Lifespan: 20-30 years.
Tear-Off
Complete removal of all existing roofing layers down to the deck. Required by code when two layers already exist and strongly recommended for all replacements.
U
Underlayment
The water-resistant barrier installed between roof decking and shingles. Types: asphalt-saturated felt (#15 or #30) or synthetic. Provides secondary water protection.
UL 2218
Underwriters Laboratories standard for impact resistance testing of roofing materials. Class 4 is the highest rating — withstands a 2-inch steel ball from 20 feet.
V
Valley
The internal angle where two sloping roof planes meet. Water concentrates here, making valley construction (open metal vs. closed-cut vs. woven) critical for leak prevention.
Vapor Barrier
A material that retards moisture movement through the roof assembly. Placement depends on climate zone — in Oklahoma, it goes on the warm side (interior) of the insulation.
W
Wind Uplift
The force of wind trying to lift shingles off the roof deck. Proper nailing, sealed adhesive strips, and starter strips resist uplift. The leading cause of post-storm shingle loss.
Woven Valley
A valley construction method where shingles from both roof planes are interleaved (woven) through the valley. Traditional look; less common now than open metal valleys.
X
Xactimate
The industry-standard software used by insurance adjusters and contractors to estimate roof repair and replacement costs. Outputs line-item estimates with regional pricing data.
